Oak Brook, Ill. – Spencer Hutchens, Jr., former senior vice president, quality and ethics at Intertek, a leading provider of quality and safety solutions serving a wide range of industries around the world, was recently honored by the American Productivity & Quality Center (APQC), a non-profit best practices and benchmarking firm, and the American Society for Quality (ASQ), at the ASQ’s annual World Conference on Quality and Improvement, for his dedication to corporate social responsibility (CSR) and quality initiatives. Mr. Hutchens was presented with the third annual C. Jackson Grayson Distinguished Quality Pioneer Medal, as well as the E. Jack Lancaster Medal in recognition of his ground-breaking efforts in the CSR and quality control fields.

Awarded annually by the APQC, the C. Jackson Grayson Medal recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in the application of quality philosophy, methods and tools in education, healthcare, public service and not-for-profit organizations. Mr. Hutchens was chosen for his dedication to principles of accountability towards both society and the environment.

The Lancaster Medal is presented by the ASQ to an individual who has demonstrated exceptional leadership and outstanding contribution to the International Fraternity of Quality Professionals and dedication on the international scene in promoting the quality profession. Mr. Hutchens was chosen to receive the award for his inspirational leadership and dedicated personal commitment to the cause of excellence and empathetic respect for the rights of individuals, and exceptional role in vigorous support of the global quality community. 

In recognition of Mr. Hutchens’ position as a global expert in the field of quality control, ASQ also recently created the Spencer Hutchens, Jr. Social Responsibility Medal in his honor. The inaugural medal was awarded at the ASQ conference to Joanne Vincenten, director of the European Child Safety Alliance, a non-governmental organization that represents health and safety agencies, research bodies and private sector organizations working to prevent injury and to promote safety.

Mr. Hutchens has received numerous awards and honors throughout his decades-long career. Most notably, he has twice been awarded both the Defense Logistics Agency Meritorious Service Award and the Defense Logistics Award – the highest award given by the Department of Defense. He also served as the President of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Consortium, and is an Academician for the International Academy for Quality. Mr. Hutchens has authored many publications and has become an internationally renowned speaker as he continues a lifelong dedication to the development and improvement of quality control worldwide.
