Proactive assessments to help protect personnel, communities and environment
Do you have full visibility of your process risks?
Process Safety Risk Studies (PSRS) are proactive, structured assessments designed to identify process hazards, evaluate operational risk, and define effective safeguards across high-hazard industries such as oil & gas, petrochemicals, power generation, manufacturing and mining.
Risk isn’t optional—but incidents are. Risk studies empower organizations to proactively identify hazards, quantify risk, and implement robust safeguards before issues escalate into costly or catastrophic events.
Intertek supports clients across the full lifecycle — from process design to operations — uncovering hidden vulnerabilities and providing insights needed to mitigate risks through robust engineering and operational controls. Our approach integrates risk analysis with asset integrity and operational reliability, enabling safer, more resilient operations.
We provide a practical and integrated view of process risk, combining engineering expertise, operational understanding and asset integrity insight to improve safety and reliability.
- Hazard Identification - Identification of potential hazards and undesired events associated with the process, considering operational conditions, equipment, and external factors.
- Risk Analysis - Systematic evaluation of identified scenarios to determine causes, consequences, and likelihood, using structured methodologies such as HAZOP, LOPA, and QRA.
- Safeguard Definition - Identification and validation of existing and required protection layers (engineering and administrative controls) to reduce risks to acceptable levels.
- Implementation Support - Support during the implementation of recommended actions, including design adjustments, procedural improvements, and integration with operational practices.
- Verification and Continuous Improvement - Ongoing verification of safeguard performance and continuous reassessment of risks throughout the asset lifecycle.
Studies include, but are not limited to:
- Hazard Identification Study (HAZID) / Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP) studies systematically reveal process deviations and hidden operational risks (including human factors and operator interactions) early on before they become real-world problems.
- Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) provides data-driven insights into the likelihood and consequences of major incidents—supporting smarter, risk-based decisions that can protect personnel, assets and environment.
- Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) ensures your layers of protection are effective, independent, and reliable when it matters most. This semi-quantitative assessment reviews risk scenarios to determine if there are enough safety layers between a hazard and a potential consequence.
- Process Hazard Analysis (PHA):A comprehensive review (e.g., OSHA required) of what could go wrong and what safeguards are in place.
- What-If Analyses: A brainstorming approach that poses hypothetical scenarios to identify hazards.
- Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA):Examines how individual equipment failures affect the overall process.
- Management of Change (MoC): Risk assessment conducted when modifications are made to a process.
Why It Matters
Process Safety Risk Studies are not just a regulatory requirement—they are a fundamental part of responsible operations. By proactively identifying hazards and strengthening safeguards, organizations can:
- Protect personnel and communities
- Strengthen safety culture and risk awareness
- Enhance operational reliability and decision-making
- Optimize CAPEX and OPEX through risk-based prioritization
- Safeguard assets, infrastructure and production continuity (build long-term resilience)
- Minimize downtime and unplanned shutdowns
- Strengthen stakeholder confidence and regulatory standing
Anticipate Risk. Prevent Failure. Protect What Matters Most.
