Intertek is the preferred Energy Efficiency Testing and Certification partner of government authorities, industry associations and manufacturers
What is Energy Efficiency Testing?
Energy efficiency testing is the process of evaluating how effectively a product, system, or building uses energy to perform its intended function. The goal is to measure energy consumption under controlled, standardized conditions so manufacturers, regulators, and consumers can understand how much energy the product requires and how efficiently it converts that energy into useful output.
Energy efficiency testing typically involves:
- Measuring power consumption during operation, standby, and idle modes.
- Assessing performance to ensure the product still meets required functionality while using less energy.
- Comparing results to standards or benchmarks such as ENERGY STAR®, DOE requirements, IEC/ISO standards, or local building codes.
- Identifying design improvements that can reduce operating costs, conserve resources, and meet regulatory or market expectations.
This type of testing is common for appliances, HVAC systems, lighting, industrial equipment, electronics, vehicles, and even entire buildings. It supports product labeling, regulatory compliance, sustainability goals, and consumer confidence.
Why is Energy Efficiency Certification Important?
Energy efficiency certification is important because it proves that a product, system, or building meets established energy-performance standards through 3rd party independent testing and verification companies like Intertek. This not only ensures compliance with regulatory requirements but also increases consumer trust by confirming that efficiency claims are accurate and credible. Certified products typically operate with lower energy consumption, reducing operating costs for users while supporting broader sustainability and emissions-reduction goals. Additionally, certification can enhance market access, improve competitiveness, and help manufacturers identify opportunities to optimize product design and performance.
